A report by the Center for Biological Diversity and Collective Fashion Justice’s CIRCUMFAUNA initiative highlights wool production as a major factor in biodiversity loss and climate change. The report, detailed in an article by Fibre2Fashion, states that wool has a greater climate impact than materials like acrylic and cotton, and its production leads to extensive land use and chemical pollution harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
Despite these environmental concerns, a significant portion of consumers still consider wool to be eco-friendly. In response, the organizations are advocating for the fashion industry to:
Reduce wool usage by at least 50% by 2025.
Support the development of innovative materials.
Adopt alternatives such as plant-derived and high-tech fabrics.
Acknowledge the environmental damage caused by wool in their sustainability messaging.
These conclusions are supported by data from sources including the Higg Material Sustainability Index and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
